There’s a high pressure system to our north and a low pressure to our south. This continues our strong east wind at 10-25mph with gusts up to 35mph, especially lakeside. The low is doing its best to bring moisture to the Northland, it looks like some of it makes its way to Highway 2 by around midnight tonight. Expect cloudy skies to the north of Highway 2. Temperatures are in the mid to upper 20s for lows.
As the low nears it brings the snow to the Twin Ports area by mid morning. Areas north are dry. The low pressure system moves over the Nebraska/Iowa border by Thursday afternoon. As it gets closer the moisture moves further north. By mid afternoon it reaches the Iron Range. Winds are howling out of the northeast at 20-30mph with gusts in the Twin Ports around 50mph. 13-16’ waves are possible on Lake Superior and lakeshore flooding is a concern, along with ice chunks and rocks being thrown into the air by the large waves around Park Point. The highest winds and heaviest snow happens during the evening hours as the low moves into southern Minnesota. In NW Wisconsin we have warm air moving in which will bring sleet, and rain reducing snow totals.
The low lingers in Southern Minnesota overnight into Friday. Snow chance is 100%. We continue to have high winds and the snow reaches the Borderland. By Friday morning the low has moved over the Twin Cities and a heavy swath of snow sits over the Brainerd Lakes region. During the afternoon steady snow is falling in NE Minnesota and a mix is possible in NW Wisconsin. Morning lows are in the upper 20s and highs are in the mid 30s. By the afternoon the snow is still falling, but at a reduced rate.
Overnight into Saturday we still have some lingering flurries as the low moves northeast into Eastern Ontario. Chance of overnight snow is 40%. Expect clouds in the morning on Saturday and the sun returns by the afternoon. Morning lows are in the mid 20s and highs reach the low 40s to upper 30s.
Expect 10-14” in Duluth, Cloquet, Aitkin, and Grand Rapids. 6-10” for the Iron Range, Ely, Grand Marais, Ashland, and Hayward. 4-8” for International Falls and just north of Ely. 4-8” for Ironwood with some sleet and rain mixing in.
Sunday expect a nice day. Lows in the low 20s and highs in the low 40s.
