UMD volleyball opens practice with confidence in lineup

Duluth, Minn. — After last year’s NSIC title and a NCAA post-season run, the UMD volleyball team returns just as poised for another successful season.

As with every season, the dogs lose some notable contributors, leaving holes in their front row. They’ve been able to replace those caliber of players before, and they’re confident they can do it again.

“Everybody’s kind of aware that we lost those two players and they were the two players that had the highest attempts on the team,” said senior setter Emily (Torve) Balts.

“But we’re just looking to create a new image for the team. We’re not focused on necessarily replacing them but who are we going to be this year.”

“It feels like we have this conversation every year. How are we ever going to replace so and so,” said head coach Jim Boos.

“And someone steps up and it’s their time to shine and those are the battles we really enjoy watching for the next couple weeks to figure out what we’re going to be and maybe by the end of the year it’s a different lineup than what we start with.”

UMD opens their season on September 6th with a two-day tournament down in West Palm Beach, Florida. They return to Romano for the home opener on September 20th against Upper Iowa.
