CULVER, MN – South Ridge senior Malania Madill has the circle on lockdown.
In the final four games of the section 7A softball tournament, Madill mowed down opposing lineups for shutout wins. The Panthers needed it too, winning each of the last three by a score of 1-0.
Their finals matchup against Cherry particularity stressful for the Panthers. The Tigers advanced a runner to second base in the top of the seventh inning with just one out. Madill pitched out of the jam, bringing to South Ridge back to the plate for a walk off single to send them to the state tournament.
“I just was trying to pitch strikes and try to keep the game under our control,” said Madill.
“It helps that we have such a great team behind me, then I can kind of take it easy I guess and just pitch the ball. It’s my biggest dream in my softball career, so it means everything to me that we’re going down there.”
In light of her postseason dominance, Malania is the KBJR 6 Athlete of the Week.
South Ridge head coach and former UW-Superior head coach Roger Plachta said that Madill’s performances have put her on a different level.
“She’s been phoemomenal. Ever since I started there, see I recruited her at UWS, and I really didn’t know if she was good enough to play there, and once I got to South Ridge, I know she’s good enough to play there. She didn’t give up a run in 4 games, so she did tremendous,” said Plachta.
The Panthers will open the MSHSL class A softball tournament on Thursday at 1p.m. against New York Mills.
