Staying home: UMD commit Madysen Stariha trending upwards in senior season

SUPERIOR, WI – Last year, Superior pitcher Madysen Stariha committed to play division one softball at Binghamton University in New York.

Over the ensuing summer, she made the tough decision to stay home in the Twin Ports, with the goal of earning an accounting degree at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Binghamton did not offer that degree, so she began showing interest in Jen Walter’s Bulldog softball team.

“I’m excited to stay home,” said Stariha. “I think education and my career is more important than just playing softball.”

Her high school coach Mike Sather added that Stariha met some new people, that made the decision to stay home a little bit easier.

“I think this is going to work out great for her because there’s another girl from Superior over there, so they’ll be good teammates, and there’s other girls over there that she’s played with,” said Sather. “And it’s nice being home, what the heck.”

In her senior season with the Spartans, Stariha has posted a 1.15 earned run average, while raking in a .500 batting average. She also threw a no-hitter with ten strikeouts and no walks against Eau Claire Memorial in April.

“You know I can’t talk for everybody, but as far as the years that I’ve been coaching, she’s been one of the ones up there that I’ll always remember,” said Sather.

“So I guess if that’s ranking high, that means something.”
