SUPERIOR, WI – The Superior boy’s hockey team moved up four spots in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey rankings to number four after their 3-1 win over previously top ranked Hudson on Saturday.
It snaps a seven games losing streak against the Raiders, dating back to their 2015 state championship season.
“Great validation for us, great momentum and it definitely just picks the kids up and says you know what, we’re the real deal,” said head coach Jason Kalin. “The one thing that you can tell about a team right off the bat is their attitude, and I think our attitudes are perfect and it’s fun to be with these guys because I think they’re focused, and they wanna have fun and win games.”
The statement win featured a strong performance from the Spartans’ penalty kill, fighting off seven of eight penalties, one of which a five minute major. Over the course of the game, Hudson had two separate 5-on-3 opportunities that Superior successfully killed.
“We’ve had to rely quite heavily on them, because it’s been a penalty filled beginning of the season,” said Kalin. “I think right now we’re firing, not quite on all cylinders, but we’re getting there.”
Before their win over Hudson, the Spartans knocked off Eau Claire Memorial, who had won eight straight against Superior up to that point.
“We have 11 seniors, our top four leading scorers from last year are back, our goaltender is performing admirably right now. Defensively, I think our guys are buying into the system and doing the things we need to do to win games,” said Kalin.
Tuesday night, the Spartans will host Chippewa Falls, another perennial contender out of the Big Rivers Conference. The Cardinals also topped Hudson earlier this season, after scoring on three of their first four shots of the game.
“We want to make sure we do the same thing against Chippewa Falls, they’re coming up here, it’s our barn, we’ve gotta protect and make sure we come with some energy,” said Kalin.
Puck drop between the Cardinals and the Spartans is set for 7 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
