HERMANTOWN, MN – The Hermantown football team is headed to the state tournament for the first time since 2015.

First year head coach Mike Zagelmeyer led the Hawks to a 7-1 record, and improvement from their 2-6 finish in 2017.

In the section 7AAAA championship, the Hawks won 20-14 over Cloquet, the only team that has been able to beat them in the regular season.

“Well, you know, I think Cloquet did everyone a favor in northern Minnesota by them going all the way to the title game last year, and really, they could have had a shot at winning it, so what Cloquet did for us, and for everybody in this area regarding high school football was great,” said Zagelmeyer. “These kids believe that they can do it too, and that’s what we’re training to do.”

Hermantown will take on Willmar in Monticello on Friday night at 7p.m.
