BUFFALO, NY–The University of Minnesota-Duluth men’s hockey team has defeated Providence in the Frozen Four semifinals, advancing the team to the national championship title game for the for the third year in a row.
Sophomore center Justin Richards put UMD on the scoreboard in the second period with a wrist shot from outside the right circle. Providence would later equalize, to tie the score up 1-1 heading into the third period.
With less than ten minutes remaining, senior wing Billy Exell tapped in a rebound in front to put the Bulldogs in front 2-1.
They added two empty netters to seal the 4-1 win, and advanced to their third consecutive national championship game. The Bulldogs could potentially become the first back-to-back national champions since Denver in 2004-05.
UMD will play the winner of the University of Denver and the University of Massachusetts at 7 p.m. CT Saturday in Buffalo, New York.
Denver and U-Mass square off at 7:30 p.m. CT Thursday.
