Daily rainfall records break during latest storm

DULUTH, MN– In what seems to be a reoccurring theme over the last six weeks, another storm system hits the Northland, but it wasn’t snow we were dealing with this time.

This latest round of snow brought enough warm air for the precipitation to be in the form of rain, something we have not seen since the fall.

The combination of the warm air and rainfall is not a good thing though, especially with the deep snow pack we have, since it has led to flooded basements and roadways.

Here are some of the latest rain totals through Thursday morning:

  • Beaver Bay: 1.24″
  • 4 miles NNW of Taconite: 1.18″
  • 6 miles SSW of Grand Rapids: 1.15″
  • Downtown Grand Marais: 1.11″
  • Brainerd: 1.10″
  • Hovland: 1.09″
  • Breezy Point: 1.04″
  • Fort Ripley: 0.99″
  • Grand Rapids: 0.98″
  • Jacobson: 0.93″
  • Hibbing: 0.82″
  • Floodwood: 0.75″
  • Bayfield: 0.66″
  • NWS Duluth: 0.60″
  • Superior: 0.44″
  • Ashland: 0.40″
  • Washburn: 0.40″

International Falls and Brainerd both set records for rainfall Wednesday; International Falls recorded 0.26″, breaking the old record of 0.18″ set in 2016, and Brainerd record 1.10″, breaking their record of 0.49″ set back in 1986.

With the warm temperatures and rainfall, the snow depth has decreased to 20 inches as of Thursday morning according to the National Weather Service in Duluth, down from 25 inches Tuesday morning.

Some areas could see another couple hundredths to couple tenths of an inch of rain today before colder air arrives, changing the rain to snow.
