Northern Wisconsin, U.P. to receive first significant snowfall of the season

HURLEY, WI– Get your snow shovels and snow blowers ready.

Meteorologists say a strong northwest wind will allow the lake effect snow machine to turn on and bring rounds of moderate to heavy snow to the region.

Winter Storm warnings are up for Ashland, Iron and Gogebic counties lasting through 6 a.m. Saturday, while Bayfield county is under a Winter Weather Advisory through midnight Friday night.

The heaviest snowfall is expected to be between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday.

The snow will continue throughout the day Friday along the South Shore and U.P., continuing over the U.P. and the snowbelt region in Iron county through Saturday morning.

When it is all said and done, areas including Mellen, Hurley and Ironwood could receive 8-15″ of snow, possibly up to 18″; the Mercer area could see 6-12″ of snow and areas including Ashland, the Bayfield Peninsula, and Drummond could receive 2-6″

Along with the snow, winds will be gusty out of the northwest around 10-20 mph with gusts as high as 35 mph, which could make for near whiteout conditions.

If you are traveling near or along Highways 2, 13, 77 (from Mellen to Hurley) and 51 (south of Hurley), you could expect snow covered roads with some side roads potentially becoming impassable

Storm reports have shown that 1-3″ of snow has fallen along the Bayfield Peninsula and South Shore Friday morning.

The North Shore has also received moderate to heavy snow this morning, in particular near Grand Portage, where a foot of snow was reported at 9 a.m. at the Grand Portage Forestry office.
