DULUTH, MN– Child abuse is a growing problem across Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Dozens of people are in Duluth this week, taking a stand against child abuse. A two-day forum is being held at the DECC.

While there are several types of child abuse, such as physical and psychological, attendees at this week’s Stand Against Child Abuse also got a lesson in handling sexual abuse against children.

Case workers and community members received training in the resources available, and the needs that still need to be met.

The keynote speaker, Vanessa is hoping to make a difference by sharing her own survival story.

“If you haven’t experienced it yourself, it’s very likely someone in your inner circle has.”

Vanessa McNeal was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. Now she hopes to shed light on the issue by speaking out at forums like these all around the country.

“As a society we don’t really talk about it, its kinda of put under the rug,and so its very difficult to get the healing and support they need when we don’t talk about it. ”

Organizers hope forums like these will help communities change course.

This conference continues through Tuesday, and is funded through a Department of Human Services grant.
