Community members gather for Juneteenth celebration

DULUTH, MN– Community members gathered on Saturday to celebrate the end of slavery.

The Juneteenth celebration put on by the Duluth branch of the NAACP in Central Hillside Park featured activities such as face painting, live music, poetry, and food.

This year’s theme focuses on youth leadership.

Organizers said this is an important event not only for African-Americans but for the entire community.

“To me, Juneteenth is the African American community’s fourth of July. It’s our day of freedom and independence. And so I’m very happy to celebrate this day, as well as to have the community at large here with us,” said Claudie Washington.

Hundreds of people came to the celebration.
