Know for Wednesday: Sidewalk work on Superior St., Port Cities Luncheon details, Newton Creek discussion

TWIN PORTS– As you head out the door on this Wednesday, here are a few things you should know.

CITY OF DULUTH TO FINISH SIDEWALK WORK ON SUPERIOR STREET

DULUTH– For those traveling along Superior Street, you will want to know of some lane closures.

The City of Duluth will begin finishing the remaining sidewalks along Superior Street as the final leg of phase one.

The sidewalks to be completed are between North 6th Avenue West to Mesaba Avenue.

The project will begin Wednesday and last for two weeks, and during that time, motorists can expect some lane closures along Superior Street, but it will remain open. No businesses will be impacted by the closures.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR LUNCHEON

DULUTH– The Port Cities Luncheon is set to honor the “Woman of the Year” Wednesday afternoon.

The event, formerly known as the Duluth Day Luncheon, has occurred annually since 1925, with the first “Woman of the Year” honored in 1948.

The goal of the event is to name an individual who is an outstanding volunteer within the Port Cities area.

The luncheon will take place at the Greysolon Ballroom at 12 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and you can call 218-576-5531 to reserve your seat.

RIVER TALK MEETING

SUPERIOR– The public is invited to attend the final discussion in the River Talk series.

The series concludes Wednesday night and the topic will discuss the Newton Creek Contamination.

Lorena Rios Mendoza with University of Wisconsin-Superior has been closely monitoring water quality in Newton Creek in Superior over the past year.

The monitoring stems from the Husky Refinery explosion in April 2018.

Mendoza will discuss her findings concerning polyaromatic compounds, which are chemicals released from the burning of coal, oil, gasoline and wood.

The talk will be held at 7 p.m. at the Lake Superior Estuarium in Superior.
