Great Lakes iron ore trade takes hit in March

DULUTH, MN — Ice is to blame for a big hit to the Great Lakes iron ore trade this March.

The Lake Carriers’ Association says iron ore shipments totaled 975,000 tons last month.

That’s a 39% decrease from this time last year.

Officials say thick ice fields on the east end of Lake Superior have slowed shipping. Delayed repairs to Coast Guard icebreakers also contributed to the decline.
