First Ship Contest begins Friday

DULUTH, MN — After what seems to have been a long winter, the good news is that the shipping season is just around the corner.

Visit Duluth is partnering with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority to host the first ship contest.

Beginning Friday March 1, ship enthusiasts can begin predicting when the first vessel, or saltie, will pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge.

Last year, the Federal Weser was the first saltie to arrive in Duluth, coming in at 9:46 p.m. on April 12.

The winner of the contest last year was within 20 minutes of the arrival.

The contest ends on midnight March 24 with the first and second place winners receiving a Duluth Getaway, which includes lodging accommodations, gift cards to local restaurants and passes to several attractions.

This year, those participating will have the opportunity to win more prizes.

Visit Duluth will post trivia questions on the first ship on their website every week on the contest page and those who correctly guess the question will have the chance to win passes to certain attractions and gift cards to a local restaurant.
