DULUTH, MN — On the eve of Saturday’s deer opener hundreds of thousands of hunters are putting the final preps on their plans to spend a much anticipated weekend in the woods.
Luckily for them this year the weather conditions are lining up perfectly.
Gary Gagnon is a long time hunter from Cotton Minnesota who has high hopes for opening weekend.
“I hope my boys bag the big one.” He said.
He adds with frigidly cold weather on the horizon that will make for ideal hunting conditions.
“I think this is great weather, it’s making everything hard up in Cotton because it’s all swamps, so at least you can walk across is now.”
But with that a few extra steps are necessary while spending hours in a deer stand.
“Dress warm and take lots of hand warmers. Thermos of hot coffee is another, got to have that.” He added.
For Gagnon deer hunting is more than bagging the big one.
“It’s a good time. I get to spend time with my boys and so its the best time of the years I guess.” Said Gagnon
Scott Vanvalkenburg, the owner of Fisherman’s corner, says the later start to the season this year, will make for ideal hunting.
“I think the say that the peak is usually around the 9th of November. I think it’s just about perfect.” He said.
He also says for him snow on the ground is the biggest benefit.
“As you get older like myself it sure is nice if you can see them with a little background.” Said Vanvalkenburg.
With all these factors on the side of the hunters he expects this years harvest to be one to remember.
“Should be a darn good year, Yup!” He said.
