UPDATE: ArcelorMittal issues statement following fatal mine vehicle crash

VIRGINIA, MN — We’re now hearing from ArcelorMittal after the company says an employee died at the Minorca mine Tuesday morning.

An ArcelorMittal spokesperson issued the following statement Tuesday:

We are saddened to confirm there was a fatality at ArcelorMittal Minorca this morning. An employee was fatally injured while driving a service truck at the mine. The incident is under investigation by the company and United Steelworkers and the appropriate agencies have been notified. The company extends our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of our colleague during this difficult time. ArcelorMittal strives to ensure every employee and contractor returns home from work safely. We are deeply troubled by today’s incident and will make every effort to understand the cause and prevent re occurrence.”

Virginia fire officials were called to the crash at the mine around 9:40 a.m..

Officials say when crews arrived, they discovered a mine service vehicle had crashed on a haul road within the mine property.

The employee was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is currently under investigation.

VIRGINIA, MN – The Virginia Fire Department responded Tuesday morning to the report of a motor vehicle crash at the Minorca Mine.

Crews discovered that a mine service vehicle had crashed on a haul road within the mine property, the fire department said.

The lone occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is currently under investigation.

ArcelorMittal didn’t immediately respond to a request for a comment.
