Jury: Duluth man guilty of assault on same day as release from prison

DULUTH, MN– A Duluth man with a lengthy criminal history has been found guilty of several counts after beating a woman with several household items on the same day he was released from prison in July.

According to court records, a jury found Daniel Kriesel, 45, guilty of first degree assault and two counts of second degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

Court documents show a witness called police around 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 15 to report that he heard screaming on the 500 block of North 22nd Avenue West. A police spokesperson later classified the call as a “domestic disturbance.”

When police arrived, they saw a woman stumbling out of a home covered in blood and and in “extreme physical distress”.

Court records show she was taken to the hospital to be treated for several significant injuries, which included: deep cuts to her face, a partially amputated ear, cuts to her lugs, puncture wounds to her hands, swollen-shut eyes, and more.

According to court documents, the victim told police that Kriesel used a lamp, a vase, and some kind of woodworking tool along with his fists during the attack.

She also told police that Kriesel had just been released from prison that morning and was “very upset” when he returned home and she was not there.

In 2017, Kriesel was convicted of felony domestic assault. In 2008, he was charged with first-degree murder, which was later dismissed in court and reverted to robbery and felony assault charge. He also has several drunk driving and burglary charges.

Kriesel will be sentenced in November.
