1 killed, 1 injured in Cass Co. train collision

PILLAGER, MN — Authorities say a 36-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a train early Saturday morning in Cass County.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the scene of 45th Avenue Southwest in May Township, west of Pillager shortly before 7:30 a.m. for a report of a train hitting a person walking on the train track.

When they arrived, they found a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was headed east when it hit the man.

Authorities say the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

In addition, the Sheriff’s Office says a 50-year-old man who was also in the area was later found and then hospitalized in Brainerd for minor injuries.

Cass County authorities did not specify how exactly the 50-year-old was injured or if he was hit by the train.

At this time, the names of those involved are being withheld until all family members are notified.

An autopsy is scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The crash is still under investigation.
