SUPERIOR, WI– One of the Twin Ports’ largest festivals kicked off Friday in Superior.

The 2019 Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival got going with a big celebration at Barker’s Island.

It featured live music and fireworks.

60 teams are signed up with 1200 paddlers competing.

Organizers say the event is about a lot more than the action on the water.

“It’s not just a fun event. This is also a fundraiser for our community. Our charitable focus this year is on homelessness. We’re partnering with the Life House, the Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity, and the Harbor House Crisis Shelter here in Superior, Wisconsin so we’re really excited to have them on board,” said Mehgan Blair, 2019 Festival Co-Chair.

“The dragon boat races start at 8:00 Saturday morning and are expected to run until 4:00 pm.
