2 canoeists rescued in Cass County

WALKER, MN — Two people are safe after their canoe tipped and they floated in the water for several hours Monday afternoon.

Cass County Sheriff’s deputies say they responded to Leech Lake near a resort in the area of Pine Point after receiving a report of two overdue canoeists shortly before 3 p.m.

Deputies and resort staff searched the lake, and the canoeists, a 56-year-old Monticello woman and her son, a 28-year-old Minneapolis man, were eventually found in a remote wooded area by a State Patrol helicopter around 7:15 p.m.

Authorities say the canoeists had capsized and then floated in the water with the canoe for several hours before they landed on shore.

They were taken back to the resort, where they were treated on scene.
