Duluth Police: Suspect steals taser during arrest, limited force used

DULUTH, MN – A suspect snatched an officer’s taser and pointed it at another officer’s face during an attempted arrest Friday, police said.

It happened when officers responded to a report of an unwanted person with a no-bail domestic warrant at Tri Towers on the 200 block of 2nd Avenue East just after 2 p.m.

Police detained the suspect after he tried running from them, but say he resisted arrest. That’s when police say he allegedly grabbed the officer’s taser and pointed it at another officer.

Using restraint and limited force, Chief Mike Tusken said, officers were able to take the suspect into custody.

“This incident illustrates the inherent dangers of police work and how quickly the dynamics can change when a subject is resisting arrest, commented Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken.

Based on his preliminary review of body cam video, Tusken said officers responded “reasonably by using restraint in the face of a dynamic and escalating arrest of a resisting subject.”

In use of force incidents police conduct an administrative review to ensure officers’ actions were reasonable and within policy, training and legislation, Tusken said.

The 32-year-old suspect was taken to St. Louis County Jail for Disarming a Police Officer, Obstruction, 5th Degree Assault & Fleeing on Foot.
