WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 2020 National Defense Authorization Act may include a new amendment, bringing Naval ships to ports on the Great Lakes, which may impact Fraser Shipyards in Superior, along with other Great Lakes ports.

The amendment would require the Navy to consider using shipyards other than the boat’s home port for maintenance repairs.

Under current law, there are some restrictions about where naval ships can get repairs.

Supporters of the new rule say it would help clear a backlog of needed maintenance.

The amendment passed out of the House Friday as part of the NDAA, and is now headed to the Senate.
