Duluth mayor calls for closer look at hydrogen fluoride

DULUTH, MN– Duluth’s Mayor is calling for a closer look at how refineries use hydrogen fluoride.

After the explosion at Superior’s Husky Oil Refinery last year, a group of community members asked the company to reconsider its use of hydrogen fluoride.

They cited how close the fire came to a tank holding the chemical, and the possible concerns if that tank burst.

Thursday, Mayor Emily Larson asked the Duluth City Council to vote on a non-binding resolution that would request the Environmental Protection Agency review how refineries across the country use hydrogen fluoride.

No word at this point if the Superior City Council will consider something similar.
