More than 1,000 Essentia Health patients affected by information breach

DULUTH, MN — The protected health information of more than 1,000 patients at Essentia Health may be at risk, according to a news release from the healthcare system Wednesday.

Essentia says a former third-party vendor, Nemadji Research Corporation, which assisted with billing services fell victim to a phishing incident.

Essentia officials say it’s not aware of any actual or attempted misuse of the compromised information.

Steps are being taken to thoroughly investigiate the incident and ensure that the privacy of patient information is maintained, the healthcare system said.

Essentia says all patients affected will be offered free credit monitoring services.

According to Essentia, all patients who were affected by the phishing incident have been mailed letters. The affected patients are at all the hospital locations in northern Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin and Eastern North Dakota.

Anyone who has questions regarding the incident can contact Essentia at 218-786-6404 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
