DULUTH, MN– A familiar face has announced he’s running for a seat on the Duluth School Board again.
Harry Welty officially filed to enter the race for the School Board’s 2nd District seat Tuesday.
Welty ran unsuccessfully for the Duluth School Board in 2017 after serving on the board from 1995 to 2003, and again from 2013 to 2017.
He also ran against Rep. Pete Stauber in the Republican Primary for the 8th District Congressional seat.
Welty, who was a critic of the Board’s imposition of the Red Plan, said in a blog post that, if elected, his first priority would be financial equity between Duluth’s eastern and western schools. He said he would also explore having a single high school with two campuses.
Another priority, Welty said, would be hiring a new superintendent when Bill Gronseth steps down at the end of the 2020 school year.
Welty joins David Kirby in the race for the 2nd District seat.
John Schwetman and Alanna Oswald are running for the At Large seat.
Paul Sandholm is currently the only candidate in the race for the 3rd District seat.
Candidates can enter the race until 4 p.m. Tuesday.
