Superior mayor holds news conference regarding City Council president selection ahead of meeting

UPDATE 4:40 p.m. — Drama is unfolding in Superior as the fight to pick a city council president heats up once again – and now, is getting personal.

Mayor Jim Paine addressed the city just within the last hour.

Paine laid out everything that’s led up to this point during a press conference Tuesday afternoon in hopes of explaining the complicated legal process to community.

You’ll remember the city council has been in disagreement over its next president for the past couple months now.

Councilors Ruth Ludwig and Brent Fennessey are the two nominated to seek the council presidency.

The controversy arose when the council wasn’t able to reach an agreement on who should fill the job.

Since then, there’s been a lot of back and forth, including two councilors censuring each other over comments one made online about the city attorney.

Mayor Paine says it’s gotten to be a personnel issue that’s highlighting animosities between councilors.

“We still work for the people of superior and not ourselves,” said Paine.  “I’m calling on the council to set aside their egos and join me in working with the people who elected us.”

All this is going to be discussed during Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

It starts at 6:30 in the superior city council chambers.

We’ll have the latest on the conversation coming up at 10.
