DULUTH, MN — The man convicted of breaking into a Park Point home and killing a man inside has learned his fate.

Darrel Mayhew, 30, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

He will receive credit for 162 days already served, and will serve one third of his sentence on parole if he has good behavior.

Mayhew pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea deal in May.

Mayhew killed Larry Watczak, 70, and stole some money, a cell phone, and a tablet in January.

Today in court Watczak’s son Jeff made an emotional statement and said in part, “We talked on the phone everyday on the way home from work and I still catch myself trying to call him. We’ve lost a great man and we are all pretty sad.”

It was also revealed that Mayhew wrote the Watczak family an apology letter. He also addressed the family and the courtroom today saying, ” I am sorry and I love y’all and if you don’t forgive me I understand. I just pray God will.”
