Saturday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

BAYFIELD COUNTY, WI — Saturday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), and one Northland county is doing something unique to mark the day.

They’ve planted a pinwheel for each person affected by abuse.

The Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office says they received 74 reports of elder abuse in 2018.

They say if anything doesn’t seem right then it should be reported to the Aging and Disability Resource Center at (866) 663-3607.

As many as one in ten older Americans are abused or neglected each year, and only one in 14 cases of elder abuse ever comes to the attention of authorities, according to the WEAAD website.
