ST. PAUL, MN — Governor Tim Walz has reprimanded the head of the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board after a controversial hiring decision.

According to the Star Tribune, Walz sent a letter to commissioner Mark Phillips Thursday after after the IRRR hired Joe Radinovich, a former 8th District Congressional candidate, in early March.

The agency apparently gave Radinovich a six-figure salary, plus state benefits, for a position made specifically him, according to a report by the Ely Timerbjay. The state agency also allegedly skirted normal hiring protocols.

According to the Star Tribune, Walz’ letter to Phillips read, “I expect you to model openness, transparency, inclusivity, and servant leadership. In this situation, you fell far short of my expectations.”

Radinovich announced Thursday he will officially stepping down from the job Tuesday.
