Damiano Center turns 37, holds birthday celebration

DULUTH, MN– The Damiano Center is celebrating a birthday Friday.

Thirty-seven years ago on March 15, 1982, the first meal was served inside the community kitchen at the center, which is now the largest emergency meal provider in Northeastern Minnesota.

It was also found as a temporary program to help those who were in need of a good meal, especially during a recession,

In 2018, the Community Kitchen served 116,778 meals.

The program has vastly grown and expanded its offerings since it opened 37 years ago, as the current programs provide guests with free apparel, household goods, children’s programming, addiction recovery programming, referrals, and assistance with other basic needs, as it is able to operate through community donations and volunteers.

A small celebration will be held with Damiano staff and diners Friday from 11:30 to 1:00, in the Community Kitchen.
