Grand Portage Chippewa Tribal Chairman dies at 65

The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is remembering their longtime tribal chairman, who died unexpectedly over the weekend.

According to tribal representatives, Norman Deschampe died Saturday shortly before his 66th birthday.

Tribal representatives described him as a well-loved man who dedicated decades to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

Memorial services are currently being planned.

The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s vice chair is set to assume the chair position in the interim.

Tribal representatives say Deschampe would have been up for re-election in 2020.
