Reports: Polygamist group leader moves to Minnesota, buys property near Grand Marais

GRAND MARAIS, MN – A leader of a religious group that preached polygamy and marriages involving children has relocated to Minnesota.

WTIP Radio in Grand Marais reports Seth Jeffs has allegedly been living in Cook County since August of last year.

Jeffs, who has ties to the polygamous sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and is the brother of Warren Jeffs, has a history of legal trouble in the western US.

According to the Cook County Land Services Department, Jeffs purchased 40 acres of property along Pike Lake Road near Grand Marais under the business name Emerald Industries, LLC.

A land use permit approved last month calls for a 900 foot long driveway and a 6,000 square foot building to be built on the property, WTIP radio reported.

Officials say the proposed building is considered, at least in part, an interior living unit.

Minneapolis NBC affiliate KARE-TV reports just this week, a Utah attorney served Jeffs with a lawsuit that alleges Jeffs allowed and witnessed the ritualistic rape of a young girl.
