DULUTH, MN – A Duluth Police officer was hospitalized with a gunshot wound Sunday night while responding to a report of a domestic assault with a weapon at a home on the 1000 block of West Skyline Parkway.

Upon arrival just after 6:30 p.m., police began negotiating with a male suspect for his arrest, a news release stated.

After approximately an hour of negotiations, police say the suspect began firing at officers striking one officer causing a non-life threatening injury and killing his K-9 partner, Haas.

An officer returned fire, police said.

Upon gaining access to the room where the suspect was located, police found the individual deceased.

The injured officer has since been released from the hospital.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation.

More details are expected on Monday.
