Firefighters encourage Christmas tree safety

WAUSAU, WI (WAOW)- Christmas trees are part of a holiday tradition for some but can also be a fire hazard.

Firefighters said a real tree is more dangerous thank a fake one.

While people tend to think many lights and ornaments pose the biggest risk, fire experts said it’s when a real tree dries out that sparks the most concern.

“It needs to be watered because if it’s dry at any point, pine and every evergreen have a lot of oil in their needles, so when the tree dries out, that oil is highly combustible,” Wausau Firefighter Mark Hill said.

Another safety tip is to keep your Christmas tree off of floor heat vents. That could cause them to dry out quicker as well.
