Longest serving Duluth Port director passes away

ESKO, MN – The longest serving director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority has passed away after a lengthy fight with cancer.

Davis Helberg, of Esko, held the director title for 24 years until his retirement in 2003.

Most of his life was spent on and around ships. At 17-years-old, he worked as a deckhand on a steamboat, according to a 2003 Minnesota Public Radio report.

A memorial service for Helberg is being planned for Monday, November 12.
