Gov. Walz to visit Duluth Thursday evening

ST. PAUL, MN — The Governor of Minnesota will visit Duluth less than a week after he was sworn into office.

Governor Tim Walz’s office announced Wednesday that he will be visiting Duluth Thursday evening.

Walz will have a One Minnesota Inaugural Celebration from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at UMD’s Kirby Student Center Lounge.

The celebration is one of multiple events being held across the state for One Minnesota, an executive order Walz signed Wednesday morning.

The order establishes a council on diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Walz told reporters Wednesday he’ll chair the council, patterned on a similar council formed by former Gov. Mark Dayton. Walz hopes to expand its scope to include geographic diversity and other considerations.

Others members will include people from the governor’s staff and cabinet commissioners.

Walz says the council will work to ensure that all Minnesotans have the opportunity to fully participate in the development of state policy.

He says it will ensure that the “lens of equity” is focused on everything the state does, whether it’s transportation projects or hiring.

Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan says it’s meant to provide “some teeth” to ensure that everyone is seen, heard and valued by the new administration.

Walz will also hold One Minnesota celebrations in Mankato on Friday, Minneapolis on Saturday, and Moorhead on Monday.
