UPDATE: Hurley School District’s new mascot narrowed down to 13 options

UPDATE – 5/21/2019: Hurley School District’s new mascot has been narrowed down to 13 names.

Back in January, the school board voted to stop using “the Midgets” as its nickname.

The District posted to their Facebook page Tuesday saying at its first Mascot Rebranding Committee meeting, members narrowed down the new mascot to several options.

Included in the options are the Hurley Blizzards, featuring a Yeti, and the Hurley Phoenix, featuring a mythical bird of fire, to name a few.

Next Tuesday the committee will narrow it to three options.

Then students and staff will vote for their favorite pick which will then be presented to the school board in June.

HURLEY, WI — An update now to a story we brought you earlier this month, the Hurley School District is doing away with its controversial mascot.

Earlier this week, the school board voted to stop using “the Midgets” as its nickname.

For some, the name was full of history, but others saw it as just plain offensive.

The district was going to leave the decision up to voters this April, but decided that keeping the name would only continue to be a distraction to students and the community.

They plan on choosing a new mascot later this year.

No word yet on what that process will look like.

Do you agree with getting rid of the mascot's name?
