Bovey man held on $100k bail after allegedly intentionally running into USPS worker

HOYT LAKES, MN — A mail carrier is recovering from life-threatening injuries and a Bovey man is behind bars after he allegedly hit a mail truck on purpose.

According to court documents, Alan Birt, 56, was driving a three-quarter ton truck in Hoyt Lakes shortly before 11 a.m. last Wednesday.

Witnesses say they estimated Birt was traveling about 80 miles an hour when he hit the victim’s mail truck, which ejected the 55-year-old female mail carrier from the vehicle.

Police say the mail carrier suffered a skull fracture and four broken ribs.

Court documents say Birt was upset with the USPS at the time, but it’s not clear why.

Birt is being held on a  $100,000 bail on a first degree assault charge.
