New report ranks top Minnesota, Wisconsin schools

DULUTH, MN — The list of top high schools for 2019 across the country is out.

According to a U.S. News report, data from more than 23,000 public high schools was used to create the list, and 17,245 schools were ranked based on the following factors:

  • 30 percent – College Readiness, which is the proportions of 12th grade students who took and passed at least one AP or IB exam. Passing is worth three times more than just taking.
  • 20 percent – Math and Reading Proficiency, which is aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass for graduation.
  • 20 percent – Math and Reading Performance, which is how aggregated scores on state assessments compare to U.S. News’ expectations given the proortions of students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households.
  • 10 percent – Underserved Student Performance, which are scores on state assessments aggregated just among students who are black, Hispanic and from low-income households. These scores are compared to what is typical in the state for non-underserved students, with parity or higher being the goal.
  • 10 percent – College Curriculum Breadth, or the proportions of 12th grade students who took and passed PA and IB exams in multiple areas. More exams are valued more than fewer exams up to a maximum of four. Passing an exam is worth three times more than taking.
  • 10 percent – Graduation Rate – the proportion of entering ninth graders who graduated four academic years later.
