MnDOT: Hazardous road conditions expected in Minnesota through end of work week

DULUTH, MN — If you plan on driving anywhere in Minnesota throughout the rest of the week, plan on having bad driving conditions.

MnDOT officials say the upcoming snow storm could cause hazardous road conditions across the state, with heavy and drifting snow, ice, and blizzard conditions to be expected.

Drivers are asked to plan ahead, slow down, and allow snowplows the room they need to work.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service say areas along and southwest of the I-94 corridor could see up to 15 inches or more of snow.

A blizzard warning has been issued for west central and southwest Minnesota, and a winter storm warning for areas north and west of the Twin Cities metro area.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Twin Cities and southeast Minnesota.

Todd Stevens, State Maintenance Engineer, says drivers should expect the Thursday morning and afternoon commutes to be most challenging, and MnDOT crews will be out as conditions allow.

Stevens says the wind will cause major visibility issues for plow drivers and motorists.

Drivers are reminded to do the following:

  • Stay alert for snowplows, which turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They also may travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.
  • Stay back at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Don’t drive into a snow cloud.
  • Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.
  • Turn on your headlights and wear your seat belt.
  • Turn off the cruise control.
  • Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
  • Don’t drive distracted.
