ELY, MN– Installment number four of the Great Summer Getaway kicked off Thursday and Ellen Cashman, the Blueberry Festival coordinator, stopped by to talk with KBJR’s Jessie Slater.
Cashman said when the event began 39 years ago, the blueberry theme came to light with the harvesting of blueberries the way culture harvested them, as this is the time to harvest them.
At the festival, you can find original artwork, such as pottery, paintings, jewelry, photographers, reclaimed wood artwork, rustic furniture and more. Along with that, Cashman says they have a list of blueberry-only items.
In terms of the weather, Cashman says the event will take place, rain or shine, but they would monitor the weather closely if severe or threatening weather is in the forecast through the police department. In its 39-year history, they have never had to clear the area due to severe weather.
