ELY, MN– In our fourth installment of the Great Summer Getaway, Dan Wolfe sat down with business owner Dave Schmidt who came up with the souvenir.

A local photographer nicknamed the water tower in Ely “Little Ely”, so Schmidt decided to make a 3-D model of the water tower.

He said it took four hours to print, and he only prints 10 to 12 a day. He mentioned that he does these model prints often and takes the effort and time to plan out what he wants to model, but this one he said was a “15-second fluke thought”.

Schmidt was also a military contractor for nine years, so a lot of the projects he prints and models are military models.

“Little Ely” has made quite a buzz, making appearances in Florida, Norway, a Minnesota Twins Game, Iowa, Louisiana and in Arizona inside a cactus.
