Get Outdoors: Piedmont second-grade students learn about meteorology

DULUTH, MN — Believe it or not, our very own meteorologists were not always so interested in the weather, and It took a moment in their life to shape their passion. In this week’s Get Outdoors, Meteorologist Adam Lorch heads to Hartley Nature Center where they’re introducing kids to the coolest science out there.

A group of Peidmont second-graders were at Hartley Nature Center last week to learn about a science I’m very close to… Meteorology.
Tiffany Smith, the Education Director for Hartley Nature Center, said “They will be using thermometers and wind meters to take temperature and to see how fast the wind is moving and to measure wind chill. That sort of thing. generally to make scientific observations in a real-world environment.”.

And even in the 25-degree temperatures, the kids were very excited about science.

“Oh my, went all the way to seven!” Miles, a second-grader, exclaimed.

“Getting outside to learn about science just really gets those connections in the brain more readily than learning in the classroom.” said Smith.

Feeling the cold while measuring the cold at the same time helps get the lessons to stick.

Taylor Strelow, an AmeriCorps Educator and the teacher for the day said, “I need you to get with your groups, if you are the writer then grab your clipboard really quick.”

And after some measurements. It’s off to the next spot to learn about clouds.
“We try to go to some place that’s really big and open so the kids can get a picture of the sky where they will analyze and draw clouds and learn about how different cloud types tell us about what kind of weather is coming.” said Smith.
Hartley hosts schools almost every school day, but they are also open during winter break.
Smith said, “Our December holiday camp where we will be outside sledding and building things with snow, hopefully we will have some snow, and just a lot of nature play outdoors.”
