Get Outdoors: Paddle and Trains

Fall is officially underway… the colors are already looking spectacular… and there are many ways you can soak it all in. In this week’s Get outdoors, Meteorologist Adam Lorch brings us along with a local guide.. giving us a tour from a new point-of-view.

Day Tripper of Duluth has a unique way to explore the St. Louis River this fall. And it includes a paddle down the river.

Jake Boyce, Co-Owner of Day Tripper of Duluth tells me, “It’s pretty sheltered, lots of islands, lots of trees to hide behind as you paddle. We just stay pretty close together as we paddle down the river so it’s a good paddle for just about anyone.”

You’ll have some options with the vessel you wish to set off in.
“We have a kayaking option and a canoeing option. Whether that’s with our normal size canoe or a big canoe, which holds up to 10 people.” says Boyce.
But before you get out and paddle, you’ll be taking a short train ride on the Lake Superior-Mississippi rail road to get to your entry point.
Boyce said, “They go right along the western waterfront here and then of course right along the St. Louis River as well paddling down stream on the St. Louis River is always a fun thing to do. So you hop on the train right here at Clyde Avenue up to Boy Scout Landing and then paddle back.”
Boyce saw this railroad trip as a unique way to check out more fall colors.
“Super cool old train cars and there’s one that you can sit outside if the weather is allowing. Yeah it’s just pretty low-key.” said Boyce.
This time of the year is perfect for trips like this, as you will see great colors and some wildlife.
Boyce explains, “There’s lots of wildlife that you get to see out here. Very frequently there’s an eagles nest out on one of the islands that we go by and almost every time this year there of been Eagles. Fish just actually jump right out of the water why, I’m not entirely sure. But yeah, it’s pretty cool to see that but you often see deer and other wildlife to.”
