Get Outdoors: Fatbiking Hawks Ridge

Remaining Ad Time Ad - 00:00
It was the coldest weekend of the year in the Northland but there are still some *great ways to get out of the house… and get some fresh air. In this week’s Get Outdoors… Meteorologist Adam Lorch hits some popular Duluth trails on fat-bikes.
On a frosty morning, just barley above zero degrees, I set out with David Grandmaison with The Duluth Experience.
“Right now we’re on the Duluth traverse trail and conditions are fantastic.” says Grandmaison.
He is taking me fat-biking on a Duluth Trail. Fat-bikes are basically just mountain bikes with big, fat tires.
Grandmaison  said, “That provides really great traction and really great shock absorption on the trails but it’s also more friction and so there’s more effort. You’re not gonna be going as fast as you would in the summertime, it’s a slower experience.”
Grandmaison says that this is an excellent time of the year to get out on the local trails, even in the frigid temperatures.
“The cold weather that we’re having right now is doing wonders for the trail and actually this is really the best kind of weather to be out playing on the trails because you’re not going to overheat because it’s nice and cold and the trails are nice and firm so you can get some good movement and speed.” said Grandmaison.
Even on our coldest days, it’s still possible to get into the outdoors. And there are other things to do besides biking.
Grandmaison said, “Our slogan is ‘we don’t hibernate in Duluth we play’ right? So we have snowshoe adventures that are going on throughout the week, we do fat tire biking day-trip’s and we also do a night ride which is really fun.”
The night ride is a new addition to The Duluth Experience line-up. It starts with a ride down the Peidmont Trail and ends at a local brewery for pizza and beer.
Grandmaison  says, “I’ve got big headlights on the front of our bikes and headlamps. It’s really kind of a surreal experience as you’re cruising through the woods in this little bubble of light.”
