Superior man sentenced to prison for sexual assault of a child

SUPERIOR, WI — A Superior man will serve time in prison for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 12.

On Wednesday, Godfrey LaBonte, 37, received a 50 year sentence, which will be structured as 35 years of initial confinement and 15 years of extended supervision.

A jury convicted LaBonte in November of first degree child sexual assault-intercourse with a person under 12.

According to Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf, a child told a family member in December of 2017 that LaBonte had sexually assaulted her, and a forensic interview was done.

Based on the interview and an investigation, enough evidence was gathered and presented to the jury, even though DNA testing was not possible.

Fruehauf says one of the key pieces of evidence was the forensic interview, which is a structured and specialized type of interview done by a trained professional, and uses best practices informed by research and science to ensure any disclosures of abuse made by a child are truthful and reliable.
