Northern Minnesota community reacts to storm damage

ORR,MN — What may have seemed like a typical day at first, was not the case in Orr Wednesday night.

Storm spotters say they saw a tornado touch down.

Nick Daniels was relaxing in his house when he first noticed the weather saying:

“I was just sitting in my living room and I look out the window and all I could see was just pure black clouds. The whole sky just filled with black clouds, and I knew that that had to be a tornado, with all the warnings and everything.”

Volunteer EMT Joshua Gaskell said his pager went off around Eight p.m., he and other emergency service crews in the surrounding areas were on call the for majority of the night.

“We got about 2 and a half inches of rain when it started raining pretty hard. Between 7:30 and 8:30, so that’s quite a bit of rain,” he says.

For Ross Coyer and his guests staying at Cabin O’ Pines, they found themselves taking shelter in basements.

“We were filling bathtubs, anticipating the power going out. Thinking about getting lanterns, candles, generators. Letting everybody know where our storm shelters were,” says Coyer.

They all say it was a sight to see.

Daniels says:  “I’ve never been so excited in my life. I wasn’t so worried about it coming at us, I knew it wasn’t. I was like this is something cool to see in my life.”

The National Weather Service in Duluth was out today surveying storm damage.

We’ll know more about which storms produced tornadoes, and how they ranked on the EF scale in the coming days.

More severe weather is expected throughout the next several days.
