BASSETT TOWNSHIP,MN–  More than a week after a young couple was involved in a car accident with a half-ton moose we heard from one of them.

What was supposed to be a fun trip home to Two Harbors quickly turned tragic.

The crash happened overnight on July 8th on Highway 44 near Bassett Township.

Seventeen-year-old Amaya Nelson was behind the wheel when she and her 22-year-old boyfriend Remington Bellinger was in the passenger seat.

We spoke with Bellinger who recalled the accident saying, “We went right underneath his belly, in between his legs. He rolled up onto the windshield, came into the car and rolled the rest of the way over the car.”

After hitting the moose, the car continued down the highway at 50 miles per hour before veering off the road and down an embankment.

Nelson had to crawl up a hill to call 9-1-1 due to not having cell phone service.

Nelson’s father says first responders told him it was a miracle the two survived the crash.

Some of her family has traveled halfway across the country just to be by Amaya’s side during her recovery process.

Josiah Nelson said he woke up to many phone calls and flew out to Minnesota the day after the accident.

“It’s difficult and scary because you never want something like that to happen to someone so close to you,” Josiah says.

Amaya’s injuries included multiple fractures to her skull which required facial reconstruction surgery. It could take up to a year before she’s fully recovered.

Dellinger suffered small head, neck, and arm injuries.

Amaya’s family has created a GoFundMe page to help assist with Amaya’s medical expenses.

The moose did not survive the crash.

Game wardens are distributing the remains to Native American tribes for food.
