DULUTH– In honor of Flag Day Friday, community members gathered to celebrate a special flag with ties to Duluth.

The flag flew over the USS Duluth ship between 2002 and 2004. It hung from the ship’s mast during a six-month overseas deployment.

Those who served on the USS Duluth helped raise the flag once more Thursday this time at Duluth’s City Hall.

The flag will stay there until Saturday, as Navy and Marine Corps veterans who served on the USS Duluth gather for a reunion.

“I am in awe, we never flew this flag during my particular flag during the ship, I was on the ship from 1977 to 1980 and I’ve never seen it before,” said President USS Duluth Crewmembers Association,  Don Rowe.

Duluth Honor Guard, the Twin Ports Division Navy Cadets, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts also participated in the ceremony.
