Operation K-9 looks to raise money for area law enforcement teams

It’s been a bittersweet year for law enforcement K-9 teams in our region.

There have been many successes as K-9s helped apprehend armed suspects wanted for serious crimes, and sniffed out narcotics and critical evidence that led to convictions in burglary, assault and drug cases.

But the year also included the shooting death of Duluth Police K-9 Haas during a standoff with an armed man.

St. Louis County Deputy Ben Fye and K-9 Diesel stopped by the KBJR 6 studio to help preview the Northland Law Enforcement K-9 Foundation’s ‘Operation K-9’ fundraising event.

Operation K-9 will be held Thursday, June 13, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., and will highlight the work of K-9s from five area law enforcement agencies, while also paying tribute to K-9 Haas and other recently retired K-9s.

The sixth annual event is moving to a new location this year at the University of Wisconsin-Superior football field on Belknap Avenue to better accommodate the continued growth in attendance.

The public will have to the opportunity to watch demonstrations and meet the K-9s from the agencies supported by the Northland Law Enforcement K-9 Foundation (Duluth, Hermantown and Superior Police Departments; St. Louis County and Douglas County Sheriff’s Offices).

There will also be law enforcement vehicles and equipment to tour, plus other family-friendly activities.

The event is free, however donations are encouraged.

Food, beverages and K-9 souvenirs will be available for purchase with proceeds going to the K-9 Foundation. There will also be a silent auction.
